Toronto, Ontario — February 27, 2012 — Standard Auto Wreckers has posted a new video that explains exactly what the process of vehicle de-pollution is, and why it’s an important part of an automotive recycler’s role as an environmental steward. The video, “Auto Recycling and the Environment: A look at the importance of vehicle de-pollution,” opens by explaining why vehicle de-pollution is important: “Vehicle de-pollution is so important to the entire auto recycling industry, because millions of cars come off the road each year, and without auto recyclers spending the time and money to properly evacuate the fluids and decontaminate these cars, our environment would be in horrible shape,” says Paul Green, VP of Green Vehicle Disposal, during the video’s opening sequence. Green Vehicle Disposal is a network of automotive recycling facilities that offers a harmonized solution aimed toward the proper treatment of end-of-life vehicles. Standard Auto Wreckers if the founding member of Green Vehicle Disposal. “Auto recyclers really take on a lot of responsibility,” says David Gold, owner of Standard Auto wreckers. “We’re not just dealing with scrap metal. We’re dealing with a vehicle that has a high amount of dangerous and toxic fluids in them, and it needs to be handled in the most appropriate manner.”

California launches a campaign against the widespread notion that oil changes are needed every 3,000 miles. Officials say the practice wastes millions of gallons of oil a year.

Many automobile owners are spending more than they need on motor oil, believing that it should be changed every 3,000 miles even though almost no manufacturer requires such an aggressive oil-change schedule.

The long-held notion that the oil should be changed every 3,000 miles is so prevalent that California officials have launched a campaign to stop drivers from wasting millions of gallons of oil annually because they have their vehicles serviced too often.

“Our survey data found that nearly half of California drivers are still changing their oil at 3,000 miles or even sooner,” said Mark Oldfield, a spokesman for the California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery, which has launched the Check Your Number campaign to encourage drivers to go with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Improvement in oils, friction proofing and car engines have lengthened the oil-change interval, typically 7,500 miles to 10,000 miles for most vehicles.

Changing motor oil according to manufacturer specifications would reduce motor-oil demand in California by about 10 million gallons a year, the agency said. The state has created a website, checkyournumber.org, where drivers can look up the suggested motor-oil change interval number for their vehicles.

The agency and other groups said slashing motor-oil consumption would be good
for the environment and won’t hurt the longevity or reliability of autos.

“Drivers have a number of ways to reduce the environmental impact of their vehicles, which can also save them money,” said Don Anair, senior engineer at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Besides following the manufacturers recommendations for oil changes, drivers can reduce oil consumption by keeping their tires properly inflated and by avoiding idling their engines, Anair said.

“The 3,000-mile oil change just says that the marketing campaign by quick-lube companies has been effective,” said Steve Mazor, manager of the Auto Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center. It made sense years ago, when “we had cast-iron block engines with cast-iron pistons that would expand when they got hot and older lubricants,” Mazor said.

Nationally 51% of vehicle owners said they believe oil should be changed every
3,000 miles or three months, according to an August survey by market research
firm NPD Group. And just 33% wait more than 4,000 miles between oil changes,
NPD said.

Drivers should be confident in the oil service advice offered by automakers, Mazor said.

Vehicle warranties, especially for power trains, have grown longer in recent years, he noted, and automakers would not give advice that could hurt engines and increase their warranty expenses.

Ford Motor Co. recommends oil changes for most of its new vehicles at 10,000 miles, although some still require the service at 7,500 miles.

“Our new generation of engines have tighter internal tolerances, which reduces the amount of carbon and other products from combustion that gets into the oil,” said Richard Truett, a Ford spokesman.

The latest engines also run at more optimum temperatures, which diminishes the
degradation of oil.

Honda Motor Co. and its luxury marque, Acura, no longer have a set interval for motor-oil changes.

Both Honda and Acura vehicles are equipped with a maintenance minder system
that recommends oil changes and other services based on a number of vehicle-usage factors, including mileage and climate. Other manufacturers have similar systems that alert drivers to the need for an oil change.

“The idea is to prevent either over- or under-maintaining a car by following a set schedule,” said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman. “Now, there is no guesswork.”

Typically, the indicator for an oil change lights up every 5,000 to 10,000 miles in Honda and Acura vehicles.

Owners of late-model BMWs can go as many as 15,000 miles between oil changes,
depending on driving conditions. BMWs also have sensors alerting drivers to the need to change motor oil based on conditions like driving in stop-and-go traffic, making short trips and prolonged idling.

Despite these improvements, many drivers insist on changing the oil often even
if it isn’t recommended.

This has prompted some new car dealers to ask customers who come in for an oil
change when it’s not recommended to sign a document stating that they understand that the maintenance guidelines for their auto don’t require a change at that time. The dealers are worried that someone might later accuse them of selling unnecessary maintenance services.

Friends of Forgotten Children is a dynamic grassroots organization that helps to meet the needs of families and individuals in Concord and the surrounding communities.

The Friends of Forgotten Children organization strives to assist families with getting the basic life needs of food, clothes, furniture, household goods and holiday gifts. The idea behind this is simply that if the family is not using their time and energy to locate these items, they are then able to focus on the important issue, their family. The relationships and support that can occur after basic needs of life, health and safety are met are tantamount in the survival of the family unit and the strength of its members.

The person who calculated this bit of information is now and has been a professor at West Virginia University in Morgantown for the last forty plus years.

A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year. A new vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons of gas a year. So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year per clunker. The government claims 700,000 clunkers have been replaced so that’s 224 million gallons saved per year. That equates to a bit over five million barrels of oil. Five million barrels is about five hours worth of consumption. More importantly, five million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel cost $350 million dollars. So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save 350 million, not counting administrative costs. We spent $8.57 for every $1.00 we saved.

I’m pretty sure they will do a much better job with our health care though……….

The lesson is simple; keep the name of your Insurance Carrier in a file for as long as you own your business and beyond.

The reason for this, you may need to alert them, even though they are not your carrier now, to an event that they covered in the time period of coverage. I have had two cases where litigation has requested the name of the Insurance Carrier to explore the possibility of coverage, 20 years later than the event.

Does this make any sense to you, probably not, but to a lawyer it is a possible gold mine. (To the limits of the policy then the mine fades out). Case in point, 25 years ago, we, according to some records may have had 550 gallons of waste oil pick up by a licensed (EPA Generator) State of NH licensed disposal site, for reference The Beede Waste Oil Site.

Roughly, 10 years later the EPA took over this site as a super fund pollution site. As environmental laws are unique in their scope. Any and all contributors were liable for cleanup costs. As with a number of super fund site several of the major contributors, purchased the cleanup and liability from EPA (They could do it for less, what a surprise).

Fast forward five more years to 2005. Now the companies that bought the cleanup and liability from the EPA bring suit against any and all possible contributors to the site. Do you see where this is going now? Forward to the present, litigation continues and will continue for some time unless you settle.

Let us consider the cost of having a lawyer represent you in this case, it is not cheap. I stood on principle as we did not contribute or send any product to this site, but because I am an Auto Recycler, it is assumed I must have. The details are long and boring but I have always stood for what I believe and know. However, believing and knowing in today’s litigious society does not carry much weight. It gets expensive, and you have to make a business decision, it is less expensive to pay the (Merry Band of Thieves) lawyers or give up the principle. This is a difficult personal decision, but a wiser business decision.

In all of my conversations the lawyers were looking for Insurance Coverage, so the lesson is simple, keep a separate file of your Insurance Carrier for as long as you are in business and beyond.
